Streamlining the Process: New Online Form for Changing or Terminating a Building Surveyor

While it’s generally best practice for a building surveyor to remain involved throughout the entire building project, there are situations where a property owner may wish or need to change surveyors before the work has commenced or been completed.

To improve efficiency for property owners, agents, and relevant building surveyors – and to reduce manual processing by the VBA – a new online platform has been introduced to streamline the process for terminating or changing the appointment of a private building surveyor.

All applications must now be submitted via the VBA’s online form. PDF forms are no longer accepted.

Importantly, property owners cannot terminate the appointment of a private building surveyor without first obtaining consent from the VBA. Acceptable reasons for termination include retirement, incapacity, insolvency, or the sale of the property prior to the commencement of building work.

Alternatively, a private building surveyor may transfer their functions to another registered surveyor, provided all parties agree. This process does not require VBA consent and is often a more straightforward solution where applicable.
