External on-site hydrants may be used to protect portions of a multi storey building up to one level below and one level above the access level. When a building exceeds these levels, it is recommended that additional fire hydrants are provided to provide fire fighters with consistency throughout the building and to assist in the operational response to a fire.
In the below diagram, compliant external coverage can be provided to Ground Level, L1 and B1. The Australian Standard requires internal fire hydrants to be installed on L2, L3 and B2 to achieve coverage (hydrants shown in blue). For operational reasons, it is recommended by the MFB to also install hydrants at Ground Level, L1 and B1 (hydrants shown in green).
