Changes to the Building Act 19931 which took effect on 1 September 2016, introduced a maximum five year registration period. Accordingly, commencing 1 July 2017, all existing practitioners will need to re-register for a five year registration. To ensure a smooth transition, re-registration will take place over five years, from 1 July 2017 to 30 June 2022.
When does a Practitioner need to re- register
- Practitioners who were first registered before 1 September 2016 will need to transition to a five year registration period starting form 1 July 2017. To renew, Practitioners must complete an application and lodge it with the VBA at least three months before your registration expires. Those Practitioners whose registration expires within the next 3 months, should be completing their applications NOW.
- Practitioners who were first registered after 1 September 2016 will already be registered for five years, however, Practitioners will need to continue to pay an annual fee and provide proof of insurance annually.
Five year registration renewal process
To renew, Partitioners will need to complete a ‘Five Year Registration Renewal Application Form’ and lodge it with the VBA at least three months before their registration expires.
The form requires applicants to:
- Provide personal contact information
- State which category and class of building practitioner to renew
- Declare that no offences have been committed or breaches prescribed in the Building Regulations
- Authorise the VBA to complete a National Police Check
- Provide proof that of the required insurance cover (if required)
- Provide payment of the registration renewal fee
- Provide updated photo identification
